Australia recently charged a Russian-born couple, Kira and Igor Korolev, with espionage, leading to accusations from Russia that Australia is inciting “anti-Russian paranoia.” The couple, who hold dual citizenship, were arrested for allegedly attempting to access material related to Australia’s national security. The Australian Federal Police stated that no significant security compromise was found.
In response, Russia’s embassy in Canberra criticized the charges as a campaign to distract Australians from domestic political issues. The embassy also demanded written information from Australian authorities about the couple’s situation and considered consular assistance. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly responded, telling Russia to “back off” and stop interfering in other nations’ domestic affairs.
The Korolevs, charged under espionage laws introduced in 2018, appeared in a Brisbane court without applying for bail and were remanded in custody. The wife, a technician in the Australian Army, allegedly accessed defense materials by instructing her husband to log into her official account. If convicted, they face up to 15 years in prison.
Australia has been a significant supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion, contributing military aid and imposing sanctions on Russian entities. The espionage charges come amid ongoing tensions between Australia and Russia, further straining their diplomatic relations.
