Alliance Public Schools Reports Data Breach

On January 7, 2025, Alliance Public Schools (APS) in Nebraska was informed of a data breach involving PowerSchool, the student information system used by the district. The breach occurred on December 28, 2024, and was discovered when APS received an email notification from PowerSchool. Superintendent Dr. Troy Unzicker made a public announcement to inform the community about the situation, emphasizing the district’s commitment to transparency and caution in handling the matter. In response to the breach, APS began working closely with PowerSchool to understand the scope of the incident and its potential impact on student data.

According to Dr. Unzicker’s announcement, the unauthorized user accessed student data from APS and other school districts. Although the full extent of the data compromised has not been fully disclosed, PowerSchool has confirmed that the situation has been contained. An analysis is being conducted to assess what specific information was accessed and to determine any further necessary actions. APS has reinforced the importance of strong data security standards and made it clear that they expect their vendors, including PowerSchool, to uphold these standards at all times.

PowerSchool has assured APS that steps have been taken to prevent the unauthorized access

PowerSchool has assured APS that steps have been taken to prevent the unauthorized access from being used maliciously. The vendor has worked quickly to address the situation, containing the breach and working to mitigate any risks of further data exposure. APS has also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the privacy of its students and will continue to collaborate with PowerSchool to ensure such incidents do not occur again. While further updates are expected, APS has pledged to keep the community informed should any significant developments arise.

The breach highlights the vulnerabilities that can exist even in widely used educational technology systems. As educational institutions increasingly rely on digital platforms like PowerSchool for managing student data, the security of these systems becomes even more critical. APS has expressed its concern over the incident but has taken immediate steps to ensure the breach is contained and that all affected parties are notified. The district remains dedicated to maintaining trust and confidence in its data security practices while working to prevent future breaches.
