MITRE’s 15 New ‘On the Cusp’ Vulnerabilities

The CVE MITRE foundation has unveiled its latest “On the Cusp” report, highlighting significant changes in the rankings of Common Weakness Enumerations (CWEs) between 2022 and 2023.

While the report features the top 25 most dangerous software weaknesses that assist organizations in managing software security risks, it emphasizes the importance of considering exploitable vulnerabilities beyond this list, as they still pose substantial threats to organizations.

Based on the analysis by MITRE foundation, the top 26-40 list of vulnerabilities in 2023 witnessed notable shifts in rankings. Three vulnerabilities, including Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key (now ranked #38 from #56 in 2022), Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling (climbing to #29 from #42), and Reachable Assertion (rising to #26 from #44 in 2022), displayed significant increases in rank.

Among these, Reachable Assertion exhibited the most substantial increase, soaring 18 ranks and securing the highest increase as of 2023. Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key followed closely with a 16-rank surge, trailed by Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling with a 13-rank climb.

These changes emphasize the dynamic nature of software vulnerabilities and the need for constant vigilance in security practices.

The report also identifies vulnerabilities that dropped from the top 25 list of 2022, now positioned between ranks 26 and 40. Notably, Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference went down from rank #24 to #28, while Uncontrolled Resource Consumption dropped from rank #23 in 2022 to rank #37 in 2023, showing the most significant decline between ranks 1 and 40, decreasing by 14 ranks.

Additionally, three vulnerabilities dropped from the top 1-40 rank list, further underscoring the evolving threat landscape.
